This year in the art room, we are playing Art Game throughout the year, grades 1-5. The purposes of this game are:
Though there are prizes for this game, the ultimate goal is not to win. It is to have fun, try something different, make mistakes, learn from it, and enjoy the “process”, not the product or prize. Please remind students that it is not about the prize; it’s about learning something new and having fun.
Parent’s Role:

Parent’s Role:
- Listen and pay attention to your child’s interests and support them. If your child wants to make a puppet, please encourage their initiative. “Okay, let’s make the puppet together! How can I help?”
- Help them develop their ideas but let them be the driver of their idea generation. “What is your puppet like? (voice, any special power, friends, story, climax, etc.) How are we going to create it? What materials do we need? Can we use materials around the house?”
- Please do not make project for them. Make the project with them.
- Please make an effort to use materials that are available at home: Cereal boxes, newspapers, cans, leaves, twigs, coffee, dirt, toilet paper rolls, etc. It is part of the problem-solving skills to think of alternatives. If your child needs specific materials, please have them ask Ms. Yoo first before purchase them.
- Check out SeeSaw, the online portfolio for student work and progress. Discuss about their work and give them positive comments. (Can you tell me about your artwork? What is going on in the picture? How did you create it? What is your favorite part about your work?)
- Please make sure your child wears art-friendly clothing on the art day. (t-shirt or extra clothes)
- Display your child’s artwork at home. Give them positive comments. “I am proud of your work. I love the way you created texture/ pattern/ colors/ lines here. You are an amazing artist.”
- Parent volunteers are welcome in the art room. Please contact me if you are interested. [email protected]
- Donations are needed for keeping the art class clean and safe: a bag of baby wipe and Clorox wipes.
Assessment
- All grades K-5 will have a SeeSaw account to keep track of their artwork and points. It is a private online portfolio that only teachers, parents, administration can see the student artwork. The sketchbooks will be used to keep students’ sketches, scorecard, notes, handouts, and worksheets. Exit slips and artist statements will be required for students to organize their learning gain in writing.
